Google Cloud outage hits UK banks and services

A power outage at a Google Cloud data centre near London on Tuesday caused serious service failures, disrupting several UK banks and other businesses. Google said multiple cloud services were experiencing elevated errors and intermittent network failures in its europe-west2 region, which is its London data centre. Revolut reported disruptions to ATM withdrawals, bank transfers, and bank card top-ups. A source close to the matter attributed the Revolut disruption to Google Cloud failures. Lloyds and HSBC confirmed customers were facing issues with banking services.

Lloyds said “some customers are having issues with our app and online banking”. HSBC said customers were having “difficulties accessing our services”. A Revolut spokesperson apologised “to anyone affected and for any inconvenience caused” and confirmed that “all our customers’ money and data are safe”. Downdetector showed hundreds of reports of problems affecting other businesses, including property website Rightmove and Royal Mail postal service. Google expected full recovery around 1300 GMT on Tuesday.
