Crédit Mutuel Arkéa hit by cyberattack, bank says customers face no losses

French bank Crédit Mutuel Arkéa has reported a cyberattack that allowed fraudulent transactions, but said customers would not suffer financial losses. Teams detected the attack and brought the incident under control, according to the bank. The bank, headquartered in Brittany, western France, said in a statement that it had taken \”the decision to temporarily suspend certain transactions in order to secure operations and prevent any new fraudulent movements\”. Suspended transactions will resume shortly after final security checks and measures.

Regional newspaper Le Télégramme reported that $133 million (€118 million) was stolen, but the bank has not confirmed that figure. The bank told Le Parisien that some funds were frozen and the amount was still being assessed. The fraud was first made public by ZachXBT, an independent investigator specialising in tracking cryptocurrency transactions. According to AFP, ZachXBT said the stolen funds were routed through multiple accounts on cryptocurrency exchanges. The bank did not explain how the attack was carried out or identify possible responsible parties.
