EU considers Rome for 2027 summit ahead of Italian election
Preparations are underway for a March 2027 gathering of EU leaders in Rome, according to an EU official who spoke anonymously. The official said, “Preparations in view of holding the March 2027 EUCO in Rome are ongoing.” The plan was initially disclosed by La Stampa.
The meeting would coincide with the 70th anniversary of the Treaties of Rome, signed in 1957. Hosting the event would place Prime Minister Giorgia Meloni in the global spotlight during an election year, though no date for the Italian ballot has been set. Formal European Councils are normally held in Brussels, so relocating this summit would be unusual. Under the rules, moving it requires unanimous agreement among member states at ministerial or ambassadorial level, meaning any single country could veto the decision. No final decision has been announced.
In 2017, EU leaders gathered in Rome for the 60th anniversary, but that was a commemorative event rather than a formal summit. The regular summit that month took place in Brussels. The Italian government has not yet responded to a request for comment.
